For many years we have received numerous phone calls from our customers in Adelaide about disconnecting their natural gas to their homes and converting the entire house to a dedicated electrical power supply for appliances such as Hot Water, Cooking and Heating.
Adelaide Women’s & Children’s Hospital Build
We currently have a state-of-the-art Hospital (Women’s and Children’s Hospital) being built on the city fringe on the site of the old Thebarton Police Barracks which will be solely powered by electricity and has its own power plant being built which is underway at the moment.
This new facility is being constructed now as part of phase 1 which incorporates a multi-storey car park and the electrical power plant all being overseen by Lendlease.

The George Bolton Swimming Centre Burnside is undergoing a huge upgrade to its heating facility for its pools. The old gas pool heaters are being replaced by electrical heaters and this project is currently underway at the time of writing this article.
The Victorian government announced last year that new suburbs being created to help with the housing shortage across the country will have no access to natural or propane gas and be only allowed to use electricity for anything plumbing-related such as pool and spa heaters, ducted room heaters, patio heating, barbeques and ovens.
Looking Towards 2030 in South Australia
As licensed gasfitters, we pride ourselves on keeping up to date with current industry trends and future forecasts for the gas industry. What has been kept very quiet until now is that natural gas will gradually be blended with hydrogen to make natural gas a cleaner fuel than it already is now.
But, what has happened is many customers have done away with their natural gas and will be locked into high energy bills being dictated to them via the government and energy retailers in various states.
Our advice to our customers who are opting to convert to electricity over natural gas has always been to stay with natural gas because we understand what is happening in the market and finally this is coming out to the public. You will now start to hear advertising campaigns sprucing natural gas and how we should all use natural gas, when only a few months ago all you would hear about is how we should all just be using electricity.
What Appliances Are Good To Use With Natural Gas
There are a variety of appliances on the market today that offer amazing energy efficiency and offer fantastic flexibility for control over gas consumption.
One of the best examples of this would be continuous-flow water heaters. To start with majority of all these new systems today are 6-star energy rated and when partnered with temperature control pads you can dial up the exact temperature to be delivered at the tap every time.
What this means is that firstly you are not heating water any hotter than required and secondly you are not wasting water by mixing it at the tap and losing many litres down the drain every time. Across the Adelaide hot water market two brands dominate, and they are Rheem and Rinnai.
Another favourite appliance of ours is the gas cooktop. Bosch has a cool gas-operated cooktop which is labelled flame select. The flame select is a dial on each burner that allows the user to turn the flame control knob to an exact number and in return get the perfect flame and temperature every time they use the Bosch gas cooktop.
